Donya A. Powers, M.D., FAAFP

Dr. Powers is a graduate of Brown University’s PLME, a highly selective program which admits a few high school students into a combined undergraduate and medical school curriculum.  She was awarded a BA in biomedical ethics and biology in 1980 and her MD degree in 1983.  She continued her education with Brown’s Family Medicine residency, completing the program and attaining board certification in 1986 and recertification periodically thereafter.  She was awarded the degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) in 1994.

Practice:
Upon residency completion, Dr. Powers began a solo practice in Seekonk, MA, doing full specturm family medicine including hospital care and delivering babies.  In 1992, the practice moved to East Providence, RI and to Pawtucket,  RI in 2007. She has held a number of hospital appointments, including terms as Chair of Family Practice and Medical Staff President at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA.  For twelve years, she served as a part time medical director for Hospice of CVNA in Attleboro, MA.  Over the years, Dr. Powers has worked with several associates but is currently in solo practice.  With the ongoing changes in healthcare, she has elected to transition to the Ideal Medical Practice model, limiting the number of patients in the practice to allow for highly personalized care.

Teaching:
Dr. Powers is a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University.  She has a number of teaching awards from Brown and the Family Medicine Residency.  From time to time, you may meet Brown Medical students or Family Medicine residents at the office.  She served on the AAFP’s Committee on Scientific Program, planning national continuing medical education programs for family physicians.

Research:
Dr. Powers is a member of the AAFP’s National Research Network.  She has presented her original research at the world family medicine meetings in South Africa, Singapore and Orlando, Florida.  She served on the AAFP Commission on Science, helping develop official clinical recommendations and guidelines.

International Health:
Dr. Powers has traveled to Tajikistan (2007), Kyrgyzstan (2008, 2011) and the Republic of Georgia (2009) with the AAFP Foundation’s Physicians With Heart Program.  She helped deliver humanitarian aid to local hospitals and lead educational sessions for local family physicians.
